What is the 5G Revolution?

5G is the imminent global paradigm shift in wireless standards that will allow devices to connect with each other in rapid and seamless information sharing. Once implemented, 5G networks will increase the speed of data flows and decrease latency or wait time to near real time responsiveness. The changes will be so significant that it is difficult to predict exactly what new businesses, technologies, industries, and services will arise from the implementation of this new technology. With machine to machine communications, 5G within the next 5 years will significantly impact media, workflows, and occupations in all facets of business, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, urban planning, education, transportation, energy, and financial services.

How will this project help you prepare?

Students in human resources, international business, marketing, and transportation and customs programs will present their findings and provide you with relevant information for managing workplace changes resulting from the 5G revolution. They will create a report which will identify and describe company and/or business sector challenges found in outward and inward facing processes relating to workflow, communication, human resources, logistics, and/or finances .

Examples:

  • Students will examine existing communication and workflow (e.g., conferencing, on-boarding, telecommuting, training, etc.) within your company and describe how 5G can increase efficiencies and efficacy
  • Students will examine an existing model within your business sector (e.g., just-in-time transportation) and provide conclusions on how 5G will transform this model
  • Students will review common operations within your organization (e.g., customer service, stock control and delivery) and provide a proposal on how to optimize these processes using IoT
