Details

The Starfish Canada is looking for one intern to write five articles celebrating our 2024/2025 Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25. The articles will be between 800 to 1000 words each and cover the stories and work of multiple Top 25 winners per article. The articles will also be translated and published in both English and French in our journal, but the intern is not required to be bilingual. The articles will be published from the first week of February until the first week of April 2025.

Deliverables

The intern will be responsible for working alongside The Starfish Canada’s Editorial Leadership Team to develop, write, and edit five articles covering the stories and work of this year’s Top 25 winners. The Top 25 winners for this year will be grouped into different themes. The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for writing questions within those themes and the intern will manage gathering responses from all Top 25 winners before writing each of the articles. With the responses to the questions, the intern will be required to write different articles per theme that are not just simply a copy and paste of the Top 25 winners’ responses to the questions. The articles must tell an enticing story and adequately introduce the winners, their stories, and their work. The intern will be responsible for writing two articles in January, and three in February, spending 8 hours a week writing and editing (this timing is flexible depending on the intern's schedule).

We will connect the intern to an editor to help them with direct editing and feedback on the articles. The intern will also have weekly check-ins with the Editor-in-Chief starting in December 2024 or January 2025 in order for the Editorial Leadership Team to provide consistent feedback and support. We will provide the intern with a timeline and schedule of deadlines for the articles to stay organized and on track. The articles will be published in The Starfish Canada’s Youth Journal. Our Editorial Leadership Team at The Starfish Canada is here to support the intern from day one of this internship with anything they need. Our main form of communication is through both email and our online Slack channel, Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm, EST.

Mentorship

We will connect the intern to an editor to help them with direct editing and feedback on their writing. The intern will also have monthly check-ins with our Editor-in-Chief  in order for the Editorial Leadership Team to provide feedback and support. We will provide the intern with a timeline and a schedule of deadlines for the first draft, final draft, and publication date in order for a successful publication. The submitted articles will be published in The Starfish Canada’s Youth Journal: https://thestarfish.ca/journal/.
